Mr. Xu Lirong, General Manager of the Company

After the issuance of the China's Agenda 21 – A White Paper on Population, Environment and Development of China in the 21st Century in 1994, the Chinese government issued the Action Outlines for Sustainable Development of China at the Beginning of the 21st Century in 2003, definitely posing the guidelines and actions for China's sustainable development efforts.

COSCON, as one of the most important members of the COSCO Container Lines, is the only pilot unit in the subsidiaries that submits a single Report on the Global Compact Sustainable Development implemented by the COSCO Container Lines this year. The Report is the first report on the sustainable development efforts of COSCON. In the course of compiling, we referred to the requirements of the international general guidance to sustainable development reports such as GRI and further discussed the subjects characterized by the shipping industry.

Through this Sustainable Development Report, we hope to:

-- honestyfully reflect the influence of our business activities on the economy, the environment and the public;

-- manage the intangible assets and relationships with related parties based on indexes of the Report, and make maximum returns to the shareholders, staff, the environment and the society;

-- become an important force for promotion of the sustainable development in the industry.

In the past few years, though we have made some progress in the sustainable development, further improvements shall be made on systematic collection of data. Besides, how to promote the sustainable development in overseas countries is still a challenging task. All of these need our consistent efforts.

We have endeavored ourselves bring the report indexes into the daily management procedures to keep on improving the reliability and accuracy of the contents of the Sustainable Development Report. We invited a world-renowned third party to examine and audit the Sustainable Development Report to ensure the justice and openness of the Report.

Heavy responsibilities shall be shouldered to realize the sustainable development. Like a fleet that has just started its sailing, as long as we stick to the sustainable development, the destination of Harmony between Human Beings and the Nature will be finally reached successfully.
